Empty

Feeling empty is a hollow sense that something that should be there is missing. Days pass. You go through the motions without feeling part of them.

  • On the wheel: Flat, then numb, then empty
  • Next to it: Blank, detached
  • Nearby: Lonely, numb
  • Often points to: A missing sense of connection or purpose, felt as a void

A definition written by the people who feel it

Emptiness is hard to put into words.

So researchers asked the people who live with it. Shona Herron and Fabio Sani collected 240 people's descriptions in a 2022 survey and wrote one definition from them. Then 178 people with lived experience rated that definition, and they rated it as highly accurate.1

The definition has three strands:1

  • A void you can feel: a hollow space, felt in the mind and in the body.
  • Going through the motions: living mechanically, without purpose, numbly.
  • Disconnection: cut off from other people, and from a world that carries on, distant and unchanged, while you feel you add nothing to it.

"I have a good job and people who love me. I still come home, sit in the car in the driveway, and feel like there's nothing inside. Like I'm watching my own life through a window."

Which strand is loudest today?

Each strand has its own first step.

  1. If the void is loudest, start with the body. Eat something, drink water, stand in the sun for five minutes, and rule out the simple things first: when did you last eat or sleep well?
  2. If it's going through the motions, add one thing you choose instead of one you owe. A song you pick, a route you like. Behavioral activation, a therapy for depression with trial support, starts with small chosen actions before feelings follow.2
  3. If it's disconnection, reach toward one person. Skip the deep talk. A text that says "thinking of you" or "want to walk Saturday?" is enough.

Empty, numb or lonely?

FeelingWhat it's likeSounds like
LonelyWanting more connection than you have"I wish someone were here."
NumbYour feelings have turned quiet"Nothing reaches me."
EmptyA hollow place where something should be"Something's missing, and I don't know what."

If the main thing is that no feelings come at all, read numb. If it's distance from yourself or the world, read detached.

When the hollow comes with thoughts of not living

Emptiness is linked with many mental health difficulties, and with self-harm and suicide.3 "Feeling empty" is on the National Institute of Mental Health's list of suicide warning signs, next to feeling hopeless, trapped or having no reason to live.4

If the emptiness comes with thoughts of hurting yourself or not wanting to live, call or text 988 in the US today, or your local emergency number.

If it stays, see a doctor. The NIMH lists a persistent sad, anxious or "empty" mood among the signs of depression, when signs last most of the day, nearly every day, for at least two weeks.5 Go now. It doesn't need to get worse first.

If the empty space could speak, what would it say it needs? Write the first answer that comes, even if it's "I don't know."

Questions people ask about feeling empty

Why do I feel empty even when I have everything?

A good life on paper and feeling connected to it are two different things. The people in the 2022 study described emptiness as a problem of relating: to yourself, to others and to the world.1 That can happen in a full life too.

Is there a test for emptiness?

Researchers have built one, the Psychological Emptiness Scale, and a 2024 study tested how well it measures.3 It's a research questionnaire, not a self-check, and a doctor is the person to talk to about what your emptiness means.

  • Numb: when feeling itself goes quiet.
  • Detached: when you feel far from yourself or the world.
  • Isolated: when you're cut off from people.
