Rosebud alternatives
ยท Facts checked October 30, 2026
If you used Rosebud for free, Reflection is the closest free swap: unlimited entries and some AI coaching at no cost. Want to talk instead of type? Look at Mindsera's paid Call Mode, or Joyful, which is ours. If Rosebud's follow-up questions are what you'd miss, staying and paying $12.99 a month or $107.99 a year may be the right call.

Which one suits you
- Stay with Rosebud if: its follow-up questions are what made you write, and $107.99 a year is in your budget.
- Reflection if: you want to keep journaling for free, with some AI help, on any device.
- Day One if: you want a lifelong record with photos and maps, and AI is a bonus.
- Mindsera if: you like frameworks and lists, and want a voice conversation on the paid plan.
- Stoic if: you want a morning plan and an evening review, with mood tracking and breathing in the same app.
- Life Note if: you'd rather get a written letter back than a chat.
- Joyful (ours) if: typing feels like a wall and you'd rather talk it through out loud.
What changed at Rosebud
Rosebud's help center says: "Effective September 30, 2026, the Rosebud free plan will be retired."1 The reason: its new memory system "requires significantly more resources to run."1 It also says nothing you've written is going away. You can export everything, any time.1 Free users were pointed to an offer inside the app. No price is named.1
The homepage hasn't caught up. On October 30, 2026, it still said "Rosebud is free to use," beside trial buttons with no trial length.2 Trust the help center.
On Rosebud's side, we read five of its help center pages, its homepage, its privacy policy and its US App Store listing on October 30, 2026. The same day, every alternative got two reads: its pricing page, and the price list, privacy label and rating on its App Store listing. Nobody here bought a subscription, kept a journal in each app or tried each AI's replies, so this page compares what the companies publish. How each app feels to use is beyond it. Joyful is ours, and it got the same checks.
Reflection
Best for: keeping a free journal with some AI help.
What stood out: the free plan, called "Free Forever," includes unlimited entries, reviews, search, import and export, and prompts.3 Premium costs $8 a month, or $5.75 a month billed yearly, with a 7-day free trial.3 Reflection says entries are encrypted with AES-256 at rest and TLS in transit, and are never used to train AI.3
Drawback: syncing is limited on the free plan.3 Under data that may be used to track you, its App Store privacy label names identifiers.4 It imports from Day One or CSV. Rosebud isn't on the list.3
Our take: the closest thing to Rosebud's old free plan. Deeper AI help costs extra.
Day One
Best for: a journal you'll keep for decades, with AI on top.
What stood out: the free Basic plan has end-to-end encryption and unlimited entries on one device.5 Pay $49.99 a year for Silver and you get audio with transcription on all your devices. The AI (Daily Chat, AI summaries and Go Deeper prompts) waits in Gold, at $74.99 a year.5 It offers a 1-month free trial inside the app.5
Drawback: you need Gold for the AI. Day One's AI guide says an entry is decrypted on your device and sent to its provider, "currently OpenAI," while AI works on it.6 It says it doesn't keep those requests.6
Our take: the record comes first here. The chat is extra.
Mindsera
Best for: thinking in frameworks, with a voice conversation on the paid plan.
What stood out: Genius costs $14.99 a month or $129 a year, and includes Call Mode, "a back-and-forth voice conversation with your journal, like a coaching session."7 Its App Store listing names 50+ guided frameworks, including CBT, and AI "Minds" such as Thinking Traps.8 Mindsera says your data is not used to train or improve AI models.7
Drawback: it's the most expensive monthly plan here. Four kinds of data may be used to track you, per its App Store label: contact info, identifiers, purchases and usage data.8
Our take: the nearest match to Rosebud's voice mode. You'll pay for it.
Stoic
Best for: a morning plan and an evening review.
What stood out: guided journals, mood tracking, breathing and meditation sit in one app, with templates such as CBT-based thought dumps and therapy session prep.9 Its site says journals are stored on your devices, and Premium backs them up.10
Drawback: its website shows no prices. The App Store list has Premium from $6.99 to $39.99, AI from $12.99 to $99.99 and a $299 lifetime Premium, and it doesn't say which prices are monthly or yearly.9 If you turn AI on, entries go to the providers named in its privacy policy.10
Our take: good for routine. Less so for follow-up questions.
Life Note
Best for: a written reply after each entry, in the voice of a mentor persona.
What stood out: you choose from 1,000+ AI mentors "inspired by" thinkers such as Carl Jung or Marcus Aurelius, and they remember earlier entries.11 Premium costs $10.99 a month or $99.99 a year.11 Life Note says entries are encrypted with AES-256-GCM, staff don't read them, and they're never used to train AI.11
Drawback: free accounts get 10 entries with a mentor reply in the first week, then 3 a week.11 The mentors are AI. Not Jung, not Aurelius. It had 99 App Store ratings on October 30.11
Our take: $8 a year cheaper than Rosebud. Pick it if letters suit you better than chat.
Where Joyful fits (and yes, it's ours)
Joyful is ours, so read this part with that in mind.
Best for: saying it out loud. The app is built around a voice call with Joy. Joy remembers earlier calls.
What stood out: like Rosebud's weekly reports, Joyful writes a weekly summary, and each entry gets its own summary of emotions, themes and thinking patterns. Guided entries include Thought Record, Gratitude, Set Intentions and Celebrate Wins. Ten entries cost nothing; the App Store subscription after that is $13.99 monthly or $118.99 yearly.12 Our live privacy policy doesn't describe encryption yet. Entries are stored in Google Cloud Firestore, which encrypts data in transit and at rest by default.13
Drawback: 10 free entries, then you pay. No web or desktop app. Its App Store list also shows separate voice-minute packs, from $10 to $45.12 What you write is processed by three AI providers, which our privacy policy names: OpenAI, Anthropic and Google Cloud AI.14 It's young. On October 30 it had 9 App Store ratings.12
Who should pick something else: anyone who wants a free plan to keep. That's Reflection. And if you write more than you talk, Rosebud, Reflection or Life Note may suit you better.
Staying with Rosebud
Best for: people who'd miss the in-entry follow-up questions and the long-term memory.
What stood out: Bloom costs $12.99 a month or $107.99 a year.2 Students, people aged 65 and older, and people with a documented disability can get 40% off Bloom, for subscriptions started on the web app.15 Voice entries, a hands-free voice mode and read-aloud replies are all there.16
Drawback: every plan has a weekly AI usage budget. At 100%, Dig Deeper conversations stop until the reset.17 You can still write. Larger budgets cost more: Thrive 2x and 5x run from $24.99 to $499.99 on the App Store list.18 Its privacy policy says entries are stored on its servers, not under keys only you hold.19
Our take: if Rosebud worked for you and you qualify for the discount, staying is the simplest choice.

How to switch
- Export first. In the Rosebud app, Export is under Settings. On the web, Settings has an "Export to Markdown" button for all entries.20
- Keep the files. None of the import pages we read named Rosebud as a source, so treat the Markdown export as your archive.
- Start the new app's free plan or trial first. Then cancel Rosebud. You won't lose a week.
What did you get from Rosebud that you'd miss most: the questions, the memory, the voice, or just the habit? Write one sentence about that, and one about what you wished it did.
Answer this with JoyQuestions people ask
Is Rosebud still free?
Not as a plan. Rosebud's own support pages date the end of the free tier to September 30, 2026.1 Your old entries aren't locked away, though. They export.
What is the best free alternative to Rosebud?
Reflection, for most people. Its free plan includes unlimited entries and some AI coaching.3 Day One and Mindsera have free plans too, but Day One's AI needs Gold, and Mindsera's free plan has only basic AI prompting.5,7
Which Rosebud alternative lets me talk instead of type?
Two of them talk back. Mindsera does it only on its paid Genius plan,7 and Joyful, which is ours, is built around it.12 Reflection, Day One, Stoic and Life Note take speech too, but by their own descriptions they record or transcribe it rather than answer out loud.
Can I take my Rosebud entries with me?
Yes, as Markdown.20 Those are plain text files. Any text editor opens them, so they stay readable even if you never install another journal.
The verdict
Most people leaving Rosebud's free plan should start with Reflection: it's free, and it keeps some AI help. If you want voice and frameworks and will pay for them, Mindsera is the closest match to Rosebud's voice mode. Day One is for a lifelong record. Joyful, which is ours, is for talking it through out loud. And if Rosebud's questions are the reason you wrote at all, stay.
