Best AI journaling apps (2026)
ยท Facts checked October 29, 2026
In short: Reflection has the most generous free plan and runs on every device. Day One is the best long-term life record, with AI only on its top plan. Mindsera suits people who like thinking frameworks. Stoic fits Apple users who want morning and evening routines. Life Note answers in the voice of mentor personas. Joyful, which is ours, is built for talking out loud with CBT structure. Rosebud has had no free plan since September 30, 2026.
Quick picks
- Reflection: the most you can do free, on iPhone, Android, Mac and the web.
- Day One: a lifelong journal first; the AI waits on the top plan.
- Mindsera: thinking frameworks, plus a voice call with your journal.
- Stoic: morning and evening routines, mostly on Apple devices.
- Life Note: a written reply from a mentor persona.
- Joyful: speak instead of typing, and Joy walks you through CBT entries. Joyful is ours.
- Rosebud: follow-up questions inside the entry, if you'll pay from day one.
How we chose
For each app we read, on October 29, 2026, its website, pricing page, help center and privacy policy, and its US App Store listing (price list, privacy label, rating and rating count). Not done: no subscriptions bought, no journal kept in any of the seven, no test of how the AI replies. This compares published claims. Living with each app for a month is a test we didn't run. We kept apps whose own listing describes AI that reads or answers your entries. Daylio was left out because its listing describes mood and activity tracking without AI. Joyful is ours, and it got the same checks as the others. The order runs from the most you can do before paying to the least.

Don't pick by stars. Six of the seven sat between 4.7 and 4.9 on the US App Store that day, close enough that the number tells you nothing.1,2,3,4,5,6 Joyful showed 5.0, but from only 9 ratings.7
Reflection
Reflection gives away more than anyone else here. Its free plan has unlimited entries, reviews, search, import and export, and access to the AI coach, and it runs on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android and the web, with an importer for Day One.8
The free AI has a ceiling, though. Unlimited AI search and writing help sit in Premium, along with full syncing and PDF export, for $8 a month or $5.75 a month billed yearly after a 7-day free trial.8
Before you write anything personal, check the tracking line on its App Store label. Reflection reports identifiers there, the kind of data that can follow you across other companies' apps and websites.1
Day One
Day One is a journal that added AI, and it shows in the pricing. Basic costs nothing and gives you unlimited text entries, end-to-end encrypted.9 Silver, at $49.99 a year, adds audio recording and transcription, and the AI itself (Daily Chat, AI summaries and "Go Deeper" prompts) arrives only with Gold, at $74.99 a year.9
Day One is unusually plain about what the AI does to its encryption. To run an AI feature, the app decrypts the entry on your device and sends it to its AI provider, currently OpenAI.10 It says it doesn't keep those requests, and that entries aren't used to train AI models unless you give permission.10
Still, an encrypted entry leaves your phone each time you use the AI.
Mindsera
Mindsera is for people who think in structures: decisions, thinking traps, mental models. Its listing names 50+ guided frameworks, CBT among them, and AI "Minds" such as Thinking Traps that comment on what you wrote.3
The voice feature is a real conversation. Call Mode, a back-and-forth call with your journal, comes with the paid Genius plan at $14.99 a month or $129 a year, the most expensive monthly price on this list.11
On training, Mindsera's promise is that your data doesn't go into training or improving AI models.11 Its App Store privacy label goes further than most here, with purchases, contact info, identifiers and usage data all marked as data that may be used to track you.3
Stoic
Stoic is built around two moments in the day, a morning plan and an evening review, and it works best on Apple devices. Besides the journal it packs in mood tracking, breathing and meditation, with templates that include a CBT-based thought dump and therapy session prep.4 According to its site, your journals live on your own devices, with backup as a Premium feature.12
The price is hard to pin down. Stoic's website shows none. The App Store lists Premium at $6.99 to $39.99 and separate "AI" options at $12.99 to $99.99, with no word on the billing period of any of them.4
Turning the AI on changes where your words go: to the AI providers named in its privacy policy.12
Life Note
Life Note answers each entry with a written reply, like a letter. There are more than 1,000 AI mentors to choose from, each "inspired by" a thinker such as Carl Jung or Marcus Aurelius, and they remember what you wrote before.5 They are AI personas. Jung isn't reading your journal.
Premium costs $10.99 a month or $99.99 a year, and without it you get 10 mentor replies in the first week, then 3 a week, which is enough to tell whether you like being written back to.5 Entries are encrypted, the company says; its staff don't read them, and nothing you write is used to train AI.5 It's also small: 99 App Store ratings on October 29.5
Joyful (ours)
We built Joyful, so read this entry knowing that. It's for people who would rather say it out loud: you talk with Joy by voice, and Joy remembers your earlier calls. Talk, and the CBT structure comes with it: four guided entries, one of them a thought record. Afterward, what you said is summarized by emotion, theme and thinking pattern, and a weekly summary and goals sit on top.
The free part is short. Ten entries are free. Then comes a 7-day free trial. After it: $13.99 a month or $118.99 a year.7 Voice-minute packs, $10 to $45, are sold on top.7 There's no web or desktop app. With 9 App Store ratings, it's young.7
Like Stoic with its AI on, Joyful sends your words to outside AI providers. Joy's replies come from outside models.13 Our privacy policy names the three companies that receive your words to produce them: OpenAI, Anthropic and Google Cloud AI.13 Storage is Google Cloud Firestore, encrypted before it's written to disk and sent over TLS.14
Rosebud
Rosebud's AI asks you follow-up questions inside each entry and keeps track of your story. You can write or speak, use a hands-free voice mode, hear the replies read aloud, and get weekly reports and goal tracking.6,15 Bloom costs $12.99 a month or $107.99 a year.16
Its own pages disagreed about free use when we checked. A help center article dates the end of the free plan to September 30, 2026, yet on October 29 the homepage still read "Rosebud is free to use."17,16 Every plan has a weekly AI usage budget.18
Its privacy policy says it stores entries on its servers instead of using encryption keys only you hold, so a lost key never means lost entries.19
Where your words go when the AI reads them
An AI can't answer an entry it can't read.
Even the apps with the strongest encryption hand the text to a model when you ask for a reply. The useful questions are who receives it, and whether anyone trains on it.

Which one is best for you
- You don't want to pay yet: Reflection, then Day One or Mindsera's free plans.
- You want a record of your whole life: Day One.
- You think best in structures and lists: Mindsera.
- You want a routine on your iPhone and Mac: Stoic.
- You'd rather type and get a letter back: Life Note.
- Typing feels like a wall, and you'd rather talk: Joyful, which is ours. Rosebud and Mindsera also offer voice.
- You'd rather see a therapist: start with BetterHelp alternatives.
What do you want a journal to do for you this month: help you remember, help you sort out a feeling, or help you decide something? Write one sentence about each.
Answer this with JoyQuestions people ask
Which AI is best for journaling?
Decide first whether you want the AI to reply, to question or to listen. Life Note writes back. Rosebud asks follow-ups mid-entry. Mindsera holds your writing up against a framework. With Joyful (ours) or Mindsera's Call Mode, you talk and it talks back. None of these companies says its app replaces therapy.
Is journaling with AI a good idea?
The writing part has evidence behind it: across 146 randomized studies of expressive writing, the average effect was small but real.20 None of those studies tested an AI reply, so they say nothing about that half. Treat what the AI says the way you'd treat a friend's guess, worth hearing and sometimes wrong. If you're new to it, how to start journaling covers the writing itself.
Are AI journaling apps private?
Ask two questions of any app: does a person or a model read my entry, and does my entry train the model? The privacy table above gives each company's answer to the second. App Store labels add a third: whether data is used to track you across other apps.
Is there a free AI journal app?
Five had free plans on October 29, 2026: Reflection, Day One, Mindsera, Stoic and Life Note. Joyful gives 10 free entries. Rosebud no longer has a free plan.17
