How we chose
We started from the needs people search for (sleep, anxiety, feelings, trauma, therapy) and picked one app for each. Then, on October 30, 2026, we read every app's US App Store listing for its price list, privacy label, rating and maker, each company's own site wherever it states a price or a limit, and any published research on the app itself. No app was paid for or used over a set stretch of time, and we didn't rate the content inside them. Joyful is ours and went through the same checks. The order runs from the broadest apps to the most specific.
Small effects, and claims without studies
Some apps help some people, a little. A 2019 meta-analysis of 66 randomized trials found smartphone programs beat control conditions for depression and anxiety symptoms, with small effects.1 That's an average across many apps. It promises nothing about any one.
App store claims are a weak guide. When researchers coded the store descriptions of 73 top mental health apps, 64% claimed to work, and only one cited published research to back it up.2
For each app below, we say what has tested it. For most, we found nothing.
Headspace
Best for: learning meditation, step by step.
What stood out: 500+ guided meditations, sleepcasts, and Ebb, an AI companion.3 You can also text a mental health coach or see a licensed therapist, and with some insurance plans sessions "could cost as little as $0."3 Its App Store label lists no data used to track you.3
Drawback: its listing says it is "proven to increase happiness and reduce stress in just 10 days."3 The best-known trial of its introductory course was run by four Headspace staff.4 That isn't independent evidence. Its label also lists nine kinds of data linked to you, including health, location and search history.3 More in Headspace vs Calm.
Calm
Best for: falling asleep. Its library is built around Sleep Stories read by narrators such as Matthew McConaughey and Stephen Fry.5
What stood out: 100+ Sleep Stories, daily meditations, and 7- and 21-day mindfulness programs.5 It had 4.8 stars from 1,991,132 ratings, the most of any app here.5
Drawback: tracking. Three kinds of data (identifiers, purchases and usage data) are marked on its App Store label as possibly used to track you across other companies' apps and websites.5 Premium shows up on the in-app list at prices from $14.99 to $79.99, with no word on which is monthly.5
MindShift CBT
Best for: anxiety, worry and panic skills, for free.
What stood out: free, with a thought journal, a fear ladder, guided meditations and check-ins.6 Its site says it was originally developed with Anxiety Canada.7 In a 16-week open study of 380 adults, people using it reported less anxiety, a moderate change, along with less depression and better daily functioning.8
Drawback: that study had no control group. Four of its five authors volunteer with Anxiety Canada.8 The app calls itself "not a replacement for therapy or crisis care."7
How We Feel
Best for: finding the word for what you feel, and seeing patterns over time.
What stood out: free, from a nonprofit, "conceived in conjunction with Yale University's Center for Emotional Intelligence."9 It pairs check-ins with sleep and exercise data, offers one-minute video strategies, and says your data stays on your device unless you opt in to share it, anonymized, for research.9
Drawback: some data does leave the phone. Contact info, identifiers and other data appear on its App Store label as linked to you.9 It's for noticing feelings. It doesn't treat anything.
Finch
Best for: small self-care steps on days when bigger ones feel impossible.
What stood out: you care for a virtual pet by doing quick check-ins, breathing exercises, journaling and goals.10 It had 4.9 stars from 769,412 ratings.10 Its App Store label shows no data used for tracking.10
Drawback: it's built around a game. Some people find that motivating. Others find it a chore. Finch Plus costs anywhere from $5.99 to $69.99 on the list, and the list doesn't say which prices are monthly or yearly.10
PTSD Coach
Best for: people who have, or think they may have, PTSD, in treatment or not.
What stood out: it's free, from the VA's National Center for PTSD and the Department of Defense.11 It includes education, a self-assessment, ways to find support, and tools from relaxation skills to anger management.11 None of the data its apps send can identify you to the VA or to third parties, the VA says.12
Drawback: the VA says its apps "are not intended to replace needed professional care."12 It's built for trauma. For everyday stress, pick something else.
Talkspace
Best for: a licensed therapist, by message or video. Insurance often covers it.
What stood out: Talkspace says most insured members have a $0 copay, and it lists Aetna, Anthem, Cigna and TRICARE among its covered plans.13 Self-pay plans begin at $69 a week.13 No tracking data shows on its App Store label.14
Drawback: it isn't live help. Your therapist replies to messages "within a day or two, five days per week."13 BetterHelp vs Talkspace compares it with the other big service, and BetterHelp alternatives covers free and low-cost therapy.
Joyful (ours)
Best for: saying it out loud. It's a journal you talk to: a voice call with Joy, who remembers earlier calls, then a written summary of what came up.
What stood out: guided CBT entries such as Thought Record and Celebrate Wins, a weekly summary, goals, and a summary of each entry's emotions, themes and thinking patterns. The first 10 entries are free; after that it's $13.99 a month or $118.99 a year on the App Store.15
Drawback: it's a journal, and it isn't therapy. There's no published research on it, only 10 free entries, and no web app. We built it. Read this entry with that in mind.

The tracking column comes straight from each app's US App Store listing as it stood on October 30, 2026.3,5,6,9,10,11,14,15 Developers write these labels themselves, every listing carries Apple's note that the label "has not been verified by Apple," and we did no audit of our own.
How to check an app yourself
One Mind PsyberGuide, the app review site many older lists link to, is filed under "Past Programs" on One Mind's site.16 On October 30, 2026, its old web address showed posts reviewing brain supplements, the newest from July 2025.17 Don't rely on its old ratings.
Use MIND instead (mindapps.org). It holds 491 app evaluations, covering price, privacy, research support and features, by trained raters at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center's Division of Digital Psychiatry.18 Their yardstick is the American Psychiatric Association's app evaluation framework.18
- Who made it: a clinic, a university, a government agency, a nonprofit or a startup? The table above names each one.
- What has tested it: the app itself, or only the method it's based on? Most app store claims cite no study.
- What happens to your words: check the privacy label for data "used to track you" before you type anything personal.
Which one is best for you
- You want to learn to calm your mind: Headspace.
- You can't sleep: Calm, or CBT-i Coach, a free VA app built on CBT for insomnia. See best CBT apps.
- Anxiety is the main thing: MindShift CBT, free. Our anxiety test is a free screening check-in, not a diagnosis.
- You can't name what you feel: How We Feel.
- You want gentle daily habits: Finch.
- You've been through trauma: PTSD Coach, and a professional who treats trauma.
- You need a licensed therapist: Talkspace, or the free and low-cost options in BetterHelp alternatives.
- You think better out loud than on a keyboard: Joyful (ours).
- You're not safe right now: call or text 988. It's free, confidential and open 24/7.19

Answer this with JoyQuestions people ask
What is the number one mental health app?
There isn't one for everyone. By number of US App Store ratings on October 30, 2026, Calm led with 1,991,132, then Headspace with 973,754 and Finch with 769,412.5,3,10 Popular isn't the same as right for you.
What is the best free mental health app?
MindShift CBT for anxiety, How We Feel for feelings, and PTSD Coach for trauma symptoms are free, with no paid tier on their listings.6,9,11 The VA also makes CBT-i Coach for sleep and Mindfulness Coach, both free on the App Store.20,21
Are mental health apps evidence-based?
Some are tested and most aren't. Of the eight apps on this page, we cite a study of the app itself for two, MindShift CBT and Headspace, and people tied to each app's maker worked on both studies.8,4
Can a mental health app replace therapy?
No. An app can teach skills and help you practice them between sessions. For a diagnosis, a treatment plan or help in a crisis, you need a professional.
